(old)TIB607 - Switching from UMS or MSU to Eco Ultra ink for ValueJet (internal info only)

This article is a revised bulletin based on the old and obsolete TIB524. This document explains step by step how to switch from Universal Mild Solvent Inks (UMS) to Eco Ultra inks for 1st GEN ValueJet printers

Therefore, this article is not publicly shared but should internally be handled case-by-case only.

Important
  • If ink cassettes are not recognized by the printer. Please remove all cassettes and re-insert them one by one.
  • Make sure to follow this sheet step by step.
  • When using Mild Solvent (UMS/MSU) ink in your printer, make sure the latest firmware is installed before starting the ink switch procedure.
  • Be aware that when working with Mild Solvent (UMS/MSU) ink, adequate ventilation or air purification is recommended.

220/440ml Eco Ultra ink cassette set-up

When working with a VJ-1204, VJ-1304, VJ-1604 use 220ml cassettes:

These models are obsolete and not designed to be used with 1L ink adapters. Use cassettes instead.

Managing VOC's

The Solvent selection in our new UMS inks was put together with a very responsible mind guarding an optimum balance between performance, the operator health & safety and environmental responsibility.

You have to take into account that also a printer with UMS ink will contribute to the exhaust in the working environment, as it is the case for the other installed equipment.

  • Local health & safety regulations on exhaust vary from country to country. For UMS inks, the ventilation requirements are identical to those of Eco Ultra inks. In case of doubt, please contact a local consultancy agency.
  • The size of the room in which the production equipment is setup has a big impact on the concentration levels of the different exhaust of the customer’s production equipment.
  • With any equipment producing exhaust, it is recommended to separate the production environment from the finishing environment.

Terminology used in this document

  • Cassette
    Cassette
    • Working on VJ-1204, VJ-1304, VJ-1604(X), VJ-1614, VJ-1324(X), VJ-1624(X), VJ-1638(X) or VJ-2638(X)

  • Ink pack adapters
    • Ink adapters are not supported on 1st gen ValueJets

Background information - Moving from UMS to Eco Ultra

  • No flushing liquid is required
  • Uni- & Bidirectional alignments need to be verified
  • UMS and Eco Ultra are not 100% chemically compatible. Mixing large quantities of ink is not recommended
  • Printers without subtanks VJ-1204, VJ-1304, VJ-1324(X):
    • No "Long Store" required
    • Eco Ultra can be loaded immediately after UMS

Switching from UMS to Eco Ultra cassette set-up

For VJ-1204, VJ-1304, VJ-1604

Please note that some of the above mentioned models are officially obsolete in spare parts. These models are no longer technically supported as well. For more information about these concerned units, please read our article End of life for technical support & spare parts - Overview

Note:

  • The VJ-1204, VJ-1304 are not fit to support 440 ml ink cassettes. However, 440 ml Eco Ultra ink cassettes will not be refused by the printer meaning that 440 ml cassettes can physically be be mounted into the printer and be recognized.
    • Please note however that for 440 ml Eco Ultra ink cassettes, the ink level detection and monitoring will not happen correctly in your printer because of the length of the cartridges, they may bend backwards.
    • So In combination with the 440 ml ink cassettes on these 2 mentioned models, the following may possibly occur:
      • Run out of ink without being detected by the printer.
      • The printer may give the ink empty message too early

If the printer is running on very old firmware, make sure to update the heater firmware first before the main firmware before starting the ink-conversion!

Please follow the procedure as described below

Note
  • During ink filling:
    • Do not open the front cover.
    • Do not push the media loading lever backward.

Note
  • If a nozzle check is printed immediately after initial ink replenishment is complete, the following results may occur:
    • Printed lines become blurred.
    • The data is partially not printed.
  • Before starting this operation, make sure to perform all necessary maintenance demanded weekly.
  • If there is no improvement in the print result, perform 1 or 2 normal cleanings and leave the printer unused for a while. Afterwards, perform a nozzle check to verify if all nozzles are available

Important
  • In case a print head needs to be replaced, it's recommended to replace the print head after the ink-swicth has been completed and all ink-channels are properly rinced with the appropriate cleanings.

Verify if the latest firmware is installed

Select long store in the setup menu (user mode)

Remove UMS cassettes when asked
